| News 2012Fun Filled FestivitiesGlossop Band have had a very hectic December which saw the band play at some very varied locations. The band had a thoroughly enjoyable evening on the 30th November playing community carols for the Glossop Christmas light switch on. This was followed by carols in the festive market in Glososp. The following week saw the band play their annual Christmas concert in Denton and the band has played at this venue for nearly 30 years. We then played at All Saints in Glossop and it was lovely to play in such a lovely setting and the carols were sung with much gusto! The band then had a very well earned weeks break before then playing at Timperley to another full audience and the Bandroom. We are looking forward to whatever the New Year brings and look forward to playing for you all again soon. Merry ChristmasWe would like to thank Jim Cant for a fabulous Christmas concert in the Bandroom last night. Lovely to see a packed appreciative audience that gave their all in the carol singing. Deserved much more than the SEVERRRN (Len Goodman style) Jim gave for effort. Thanks to Nigel Fielding for standing in for Mandy Crowther and for playing In the Bleak Mid Winter. Thanks also to Tony Winterbottom, Gary Parker and Anthony Newington for helping out. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New New and look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year. Helping other local organisationsThe band has been busy since returning from the summer break. Two concerts held in our band room, the first one on 29th September to raise funds for the 1st Dinting Scouts, the second a fortnight later to raise funds for St Mary's RC church. Both nights saw a full house with both the band and audience having a very enjoyable evening of entertainment and potato pie supper. The concert for St Mary's was directed by Jim Cant (one of, if not the most successful conductor in the band's recent history). Jim has been associated with the band most of his life and conducted the band throughout the 1990's when the band achieved a record number of consecutive competition victories, racing up through the sections and eventually securing championship section status. The band are looking forward to further work with Jim throughout the Christmas period. A summer of weddings18th August saw Jenna Smith marry Paddy McBride at Hathersage with the service conducted by the band's resident vicar, Tim Robinson. The band would like to wish the happy couple all the very best for the future. Jenna walked down the 'aisle' to Procession to the Minster played on a CD!
The band were very pleased and proud to play at the wedding of former band member Peter Bowd to Kath on the 8th September in Hollingworth. Pete, as usual, was very organised wanted Trumpet Voluntary for Kath to walk into and God Be With You whilst they signed the register. He was a little 'relaxed' about what he wanted to go out to so the band chose for him and surprised him with Dark Town Strutters ball. They were on their own outside as the congregation stayed to listen to the whole performance. That'll teach him! The band would like to wish all 3 couples every happiness for the future. Cornet player needed.Glossop Old Band is currently graded as a Championship section band but are currently a non-contesting band due to shortage of players. We currently have 14 brass players and 3 percussionists which form a well balanced group and perform regularly in the Bandroom and other venues in the local area. We are looking for an experienced cornet player to join the solo cornet rank to play either ‘bumper up’ or principle cornet. You wouldn’t need to register with the band and if required could play at contests with other bands but we would need commitment to one rehearsal a week and the concerts the band has booked. The band rehearse once a week on a Tuesday evenings 8.15 to 10.00pm Applications should be sent to [email protected] or please call Janet Lewis on 07887 997374 for an informal chat. 1st rehearsalHappy New Year from all at Glossop Band. The band had a hectic but successful festive period and is looking forward to all that 2012 can bring. First rehearsal back is Tuesday 10th January at 8.15pm. |
