Then this message is for you.GLOSSOP OLD BAND have secured the services for their Christmas Concert this year at their bandroom in Wood Street, of a conductor who is undoubtedly among the finest in this country, if not the world. I refer to the current Senior Director of Music of the Household Division and Director of Music to the Coldstream Guards, Lt. Colonel Graham Jones MBE.www.gojonesmusic.comGraham Jones’ early interest in music was encouraged while a pupil of Glossopdale College and he furthered this interest as a member of Glossop Old Band during this period.He began his military career studying the harp whilst serving as a musician with the Royal Artillery Band. In 1981 he was selected to become a Bandmaster and attended the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall for three years during which time he was rewarded with prizes for composition and orchestration. He rose through the ranks conducting a variety of Army bands and received a Master of Music degree from Reading University and gained his Doctorate of Music Arts (DMA) at the University of Salford in the summer of 2006. Among the more recent highlights was the wedding early this year of HRH Prince William to Miss Kathrine Middleton (now Duchess of Cambridge) when he Directed the Massed Bands of the Household Division outside Westmister Abbey.Lt. Colonel Jones is now very much in demand as a lecturer, adjudicator and conductor in both Europe and the United States, where he has recently been guest conductor at Leigh University, Pennsylvania, USA.The success of Glossop Old Band in securing the services of such an eminent conductor is seen as a great opportunity for any former playing members of the band to come along to the bandroom on the 18th December, not only to meet with Lt. Colonel Jones MBE, but to listen to the Glossop Old Band and maybe even to play a part in the concert. One of the traditions of the Christmas concerts is for ‘guest’ players to come along to have blow and this year we would love to welcome former players to sit in with the band during the 2nd half of the concert. Sam Richardson (percussion) will be leaving the band to attend The University of Huddersfield studying Music, Anthony Newington (cornet) will be attending the University of Southampton to study Aeronautics and Astronautics and Adam Corbridge (cornet) will be at Lancaster University studying Physical Geography! All 3 players will be missed by the whole band and the last concert before the summer break will be in Glossop Bandroom on Sunday 16th July where a concert with an American theme is planned to help raise money for local Scouts to attend the 22nd World Scout Jamboree. Tickets for the concert are £6 each or Tickets £6 each, Families £20 (2 adults, 2 children) and includes a “Meat and Potato Pie”. This is extremely good news for the band who are looking forward to the final concert before the summer break on the 16th July in Glossop Bandroom https://www.glossopband.org/374 https://www.glossopband.org/374 Tue, 21 Jun 2011 23:00:00 GMT Glossop managed to play at all 11 Tameside contest on June 17th thanks to some fantastic driving skills by the band's coach driver, Viv. It turns out that Viv is a former player with Mossley St Johns and certain was in the Whit Friday spirit as she managed to gain us some valuable time by overtaking 2 coaches who were dawdling at the traffic lights in Denton! She also taught Dave Richardson the difference between a bus and a coach, just ask him next time you see him! Glossop Old Band once again have been placed 2nd local overall for Whit Friday gaining 2nd overall at Dukinfield, best local at the Broadoak and 2nd best local at Stalybridge. The music was varied and the general knowledge quiz questions were well received. This is an unusual concert in that the band participate in the quiz as they don't know the answer to the questions. This time the quiz was won by the Euphs and Baritone section. Mandy will be appearing on the Weakest Link on BBC 1 at 5.15pm and shows Anne Robinson how to march. We can’t say whether she wins or loses but it promises to be interesting viewing. Tune in to find out if Mandy really is the weakest link! UPDATE - Mandy really was the strongest link as she won the show after being the weakest link on the 1st round. The questions were set by Wendy McMylor who also chose the music for the evening. The evening was attended by Councillor Jean Wharmby who made a donation to the band of £500 Over £200 was raised on the night for much needed repairs to the bandroom roof.
